AI visibility metrics explained: visibility, position, share of voice, citations and sentiment
By Get AI Vizible · Updated
Short answer
AI visibility is measured with five numbers: visibility (the percentage of AI answers that mention your brand), average position (where you appear among the brands named), share of voice (your mentions as a share of all tracked brands' mentions), citation rate (the percentage of answers that link to your domain) and sentiment (how positively you are described). Each is calculated over a fixed set of buyer questions asked to several AI engines on a schedule.
The five metrics
| Metric | Formula | Good sign |
|---|---|---|
| Visibility | answers mentioning you ÷ all answers × 100 | Rising over time; above your main competitors |
| Average position | mean rank of your first mention among tracked brands, when mentioned | Close to 1 |
| Share of voice | your mentions ÷ mentions of you + all tracked competitors × 100 | Higher than your market share |
| Citation rate | answers that cite or link your domain ÷ all answers × 100 | Rising, especially on engines with web search |
| Sentiment | positive minus negative mentions, as a score | Positive and stable |
A worked example
You track 25 questions on 6 engines, so one scan produces 150 answers.
- You are mentioned in 45 answers: visibility = 30%.
- When mentioned, you are listed 1st, 3rd and 2nd on average: average position ≈ 2.0.
- Across all answers you get 45 mentions and three competitors get 60, 40 and 35: share of voice = 45 ÷ 180 = 25%.
- 12 answers link to your website: citation rate = 8%.
Why one answer is not a measurement
AI answers vary between runs, engines and phrasings. One screenshot can mislead you in either direction. Track a stable set of questions, run them on a schedule, and read trends rather than single results. Change your question set rarely, because every change resets the baseline.
Per-engine numbers matter
Engines differ in how they answer. Perplexity searches the web and cites sources on every answer, so content changes show up quickly. Other engines answer from model memory unless they search, so their numbers move more slowly. Report visibility per engine as well as overall.
How to improve each metric
- Visibility: answer-first pages for the questions you lose; third-party mentions on the sources the engines cite.
- Position: clear positioning ("best for X"), comparison pages and reviews that put you ahead on the criteria buyers care about.
- Share of voice: win the questions where competitors appear and you do not.
- Citation rate: crawlable pages with quotable passages, tables and FAQs; allow AI crawlers.
- Sentiment: fix wrong or outdated claims; answer objections openly on your site.
Get AI Vizible calculates all five for every scan, per engine and per question, and trends them over time.
Frequently asked questions
- What is a good AI visibility score?
- It depends on the category and question set. Compare yourself with the competitors you track on the same questions: being mentioned more often than them, and in a better position, is the goal.
- Is AI share of voice the same as AI visibility?
- No. Visibility is the share of answers that mention you. Share of voice is your mentions as a share of all mentions of you and your tracked competitors, so it shows your standing relative to them.
